Vendor Spotlight: Kate Byars Photography

Because she is the best of the best, Kate will be our September Vendor Spotlight!

I met with Kate at her precious new studio in Virginia Highlands to get the scoop on what makes her different from other photographers and what you can expect when hiring her. I think you’ll love her as much as we do once you are finished reading! Kate has loved being the creative and crafty girl in the group throughout her life. She said if she weren’t doing photography, she would definitely be doing something artsy. She loves the feeling of bringing out the joy and beauty of people in every day life and also on the most important days of their lives. Kate tries to share that joy and beauty with her clients by “finishing the job”. This is what separates her from other photographers in town. If you book her for a portrait session (pregnancy photos, family shots, newborn sessions), Kate will start off by visiting your home to get a feel of your design/decorative look. She wants to find out where the new photos will be hung and on which walls. This meeting helps set the tone for where the shoot will take place and what outfits the family should wear. After the shoot is complete, Kate sets up a meeting to go through all the photos with you and help you pick out your favorites. Because of that meeting she had with you before the shoot, she picks out different frames and mats for you to choose from that will best fit in your home where you decided together to hang the photo(s). The finishing touch is the special mounting that comes with the framing and that provides easy changeability throughout the house, and is also childproof. Did I mention that she has someone come and hang them for you? So convenient!

“Finishing the job” for weddings is slightly different. Of course Kate offers to design a photo book full of the best photos from the wedding day, but she also wants to get to know you well and make things personal for you throughout the whole process. She will go to dress fittings, walk venues, or do anything that’s necessary to capture everything you as the couple want in your wedding photos. For engagement sessions, Kate starts by meeting with you and a stylist to get to know the personalities and styles of you as a couple. They then bring accessories and outfits that will fit the theme of the shoot best. She loves hearing a bit about what you like to do together to make the location of the engagement shoot personal to you. If that is not amazing enough, she also sends little surprises every now and then to show you how much she loves you! Book her and you’ll see what she’s got up her sleeve!

Kate also offers classes on learning how to use your SLR camera once a week, and has a designer who designs cards (holiday and otherwise) personally for each client. I dare you to take one of her classes and see how much your personal photos will improve! In another blog post this month, we will be sharing the things Kate thinks are most important for brides to know BEFORE their wedding day.

If you have any specific questions for Kate, shoot us an email, ( or contact Kate directly ( . I told you she is the best of the best!
